What’s in the Air You're Breathing at Home?
Florida’s
common airborne allergens (such as Pollen, Dust, Pet Dander, and Mold)
are harmful to your health even when your inside your own home! In fact,
87% of Americans are not aware that indoor air is more polluted than
outdoor air. According to the EPA,
indoor levels of many pollutants are 25 to 100 times higher than outdoor
levels. Reason being, most of today’s homes are built with airtight
installation which is great for heating and cooling, but unfortunately,
keeps air pollutants trapped inside your home in the process.
Here’s a list of
what is potentially in your home’s air:

Pet Dander

Dust and Dust Mites
Dust
mites are tiny bugs that live in your home and feed off of human and pet
dander. Dust mites prefer to live in warm and humid areas including your
bed pillows and mattresses, carpets and furniture and their waste is the
cause of allergies and asthma. Purifying your indoor air with an air
filtration system can remove dust and dust mites. Also, wash your
bedding once a week in at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pet Dander
Pet
dander is the old skin cells or flakes frequently shed by your pet. Pet
dander is very light in weight and will stay airborne for hours. Adding
air filtration to your air conditioning system will trap pet dander in
the air and allow you to give your pet the attention it needs without
sneezing or itching.
Mold Spores and
Mildew
Mold
spores and mildew originate from damp soil and decaying vegetation.
Although, mold spores are everywhere, higher concentrations are found in
the air near farms, golf courses and artificial lakes. Inhalation of
mold spores is a common cause of asthma attacks in those who are
allergic to mold. In order to reduce mold and mildew in your home’s air,
keep the humidity level between 30-40% by using an air conditioner and a
dehumidifier. In addition, change your air filters frequently.
Harmful Bacteria
Harmful
bacteria come from people, animals, soil and plant debris and are nearly
impossible to keep out of your home’s indoor air. By using an air
filtration system, maintaining the recommended humidity level in your
home, and eliminating standing water or water damaged surfaces, you can
easily control high levels of bacteria in your home’s indoor air.
Trees and Plant
Pollen
If you
have lived in Florida during for at least one spring and summer month,
you have more than likely been affected by allergies caused by tree and
plant pollen. A centralized air conditioning system with an air
purifier is the most effective way to reduce the pollen concentration
inside your home.
Some Clean Air Facts You May Not Know
-
The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental
risks to public health.
-
More than 15
million Americans are estimated to have asthma, including one-in-13
school-age children.
-
In the last 30
years, the number of people with asthma has gone up by almost 60%.
-
87% of American
homeowners are not aware that pollution may be worse inside their
homes than outdoors.
-
The World Health
Organization estimates that approximately 30% of newly constructed
and remodeled facilities have indoor air quality problems.
-
Because they
breathe faster than adults, children inhale 50% more air per pound
of body weight than adults and are especially sensitive to air
quality problems.
-
Over 28 million
Americans suffer from hay fever and other allergies.
- According to
a study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, indoor air
contaminants are responsible for half of all illnesses.
-
Tobacco smoke
actually contains over 4,000 compounds, many of which are strong
irritants.
-
Many ordinary
activities such as cooking, cleaning and redecorating can spread
indoor pollutants.
-
Most homes
generate about 40 pounds of dust per year for every 1,500 square
feet of space.
-
About 40,000
dust mites, a common cause of household allergies, can be found in
only one ounce of dust.
-
Flowers are a
source of pollen, but trees are the main culprits for allergy
sufferers. Many trees, such as birch, alder and pine trees, rely on
the wind instead of insects to distribute their pollen.
-
Exposure to
indoor air pollutants has increased due to a variety of factors,
including the increased use of synthetic building materials and
furnishings, chemically formulated personal care products, and
household cleaners.
-
Most homes built
after 1979 have tighter insulation wraps that trap smoke, odors and
other irritants indoors.
-
It is suggested
